In the director's commentary, Paul Verhoeven discusses one of the scenes deleted from
the final cut of the film. When Sebastian (Bacon) attacks his neighbour (Mitra), the shot
follows through and shows part of the rape as well as the aftermath. However, Verhoeven
explains that early test screenings showed audiences were unprepared for Sebastian's sudden
evil. People could relate with the voyeurism, but rape was a whole different thing and
the audience's connection with Bacon's character ended too early, too soon. In order to soften
the transition, the rape shot was cut.
