As the bombings continue, the lovers are stuck in their apartment and
frantically get dressed to go into the basement to hide until the
bombings have stopped. To keep their affair a secret, Bendrix(Fiennes)
goes out to check first to make sure no one else is around to witness
their escape. Little does he know the fate that befalls him once he
steps out the bedroom door. Even though this tale is autobiographical,
the bombings provide a coincidental backdrop to their love affair. Both
can be fatal; physically and emotionally, and both will end eventually
as Bendrix often remarks.
